Threat Predictions for 2018 by eScan

As we step into the new year, 2018 and embrace the fast changing digital world, on the behind we leave a trail of 2017 marred with cyber-attacks which have been more sophisticated and lethal in a way that sabotaged many industries to individuals with huge financial loses as well as personal data loss. This raises the bar towards stronger cyber security and defence against the growing menace of cyber-attacks, which needs round the clock vigil and vigor to protect the industries and individuals for protecting the valuable data and business continuity.
The trends also showed that AI and machine learning becoming the de facto norms of adoption for future growth of businesses and industries. Cyber security solutions also now adopted it to be prepared for any untoward incidents arising out of the weakest link of cyber security that is human error.
eScan security research team has identified some of the key trends that will emerge stronger as well as the most targeted segments for security breaches. Some of them are as below:
1. Crypto currency: 2017, saw the emergence of crypto-currency as the volatile commodity, moreover, the volatility hasn’t subdued the interests of the investors. The latter half of 2017 saw Ransomware attacks with Wannacry in the forefront and their dependence on Bitcoin. Cyber criminals will continue to demand ransoms in crypto currency because of the unregulated anonymous currency market.
2018 would be the year of crypto currencies, with numerous players vying for the stability of their currency and the latter half of 2018 may lead to market consolidation, with the emergence of top crypto currencies. Due to the spiraling price of the Bitcoin, in 2018, criminals would shift their focus to other crypto-currencies and this would be the game changer in the popularity of the crypto-currencies.
The hard forks of the Bitcoin resulted in the creation of Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin Cash furthermore there are plans to introduce Bitcoin Silver, Bitcoin Platinum which would fuel the growth of Bitcoin. With so many forks, the investors would have to exercise caution as the very likelihood of fake crypto-currencies, scams and Ponzi schemes may surface in 2018.
2.Ransomware: Ransomware will continue to be a major threat in the year 2018. It is one of the easiest ways for a cyber-criminal to extract money from the victim. In 2017, we witnessed Wannacry and its usage of publicly available exploits viz. Eternal Blue for lateral movement within the network, 2018 would highlight the importance of patch-updates as a sure-way to mitigate lateral movement by Ransomware. Furthermore, Ransomware creator may shift their loyalties from Bitcoin to other crypto-currencies, since the payment of the ransom has to be viable for the victims and the surging price of the bitcoin would be the contributing factor.
2018, would also witness the custom pricing of the ransom based on the country and the capability of the targeted organization to pay up the ransom. Traditionally, spear-phishing was limited to Information Warfare; however, we may find organizations being actively targeted with specifically tailored Ransomware so as to increase the ROI for these criminals.
3.Improved Security of IoT Devices: Since the demand for smart devices and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices are increasing every day, the need for advanced security for these devices has also increased. According to recent statistics, there will be almost 30 billion connected things in major industries and IoT will touch every role across the corporates. Simultaneously, the attacks against these devices will also rise.
Besides, in 2017 IoT devices have been targeted by various botnets including the infamous Mirai botnet, which leveraged the vulnerabilities to further attack the critical infrastructure. 2018 would be a mixed bag and witness the emergence of implementation of security guidelines for the development of IoT devices amongst the vendors. Furthermore, 2018 would also be the year of IoT Botnet attacks.
4.Increase in mobile hacking: 2017 was the year which saw the emergence of DDoS malware affecting Android Devices, also witnessed the takedown of WireX Botnet which had created havoc. Information-stealing Mobile Malware cannot be attributed to cyber criminals alone, device manufactures have come under fire for violating the privacy of its users and as a precautionary measure Indian Govt. had issued a diktat against a majority of device manufacturers, furthermore black-listed more than 40 apps developed by Chinese organizations.
Device manufacturers and App developers would find 2018 to be very lucrative but would also come under the radar of privacy activists and government for flouting the norms laid down for protection of their citizens’ data. With the enforcement of GDPR just a few months away, the latter half of 2018 would witness a slew of privacy breaches by mobile app developers.
Furthermore, in 2017 users were bombarded with fake apps and vulnerabilities discovered in Android and iOS have forced companies like Google and Apple to innovate with their individual app stores and increase vigilance of the apps. 2018 would be no better and we may observe an increase in incidents involving compromised devices. Although, a few of these incidents might be attributed to Jail-Breaks / Rooting using automation, but the primary focus of the malware authors would be on fake apps.
5.Cyber espionage between countries: Global Intelligence systems within many countries today have advanced to an extent that they can effortlessly extract data from across the world to frame strategies. The nation states have seen a new realm of spying in the form of cyber espionage. This new form will affect the economic and political relationships between nation states as well as change modern warfare scenario.
Lastly, we can conclude that our users, readers and administrators should be on their toes to escape the deadly fangs of the cyber crooks. Implementation of multi-factor authentication after understanding the exact requirement thoroughly will help the organization in minimizing the chances of any kind of cyber-attacks. How to better protect your data when you’re on a business trip overseas

Government agencies, journalists, and businesses trading in some parts of the world may find themselves at greater risk of being spied upon than others.
You only have to keep a vague eye on the security headlines to recognise that organisations have had information stolen from them, or their computers compromised, when their staff have visited countries such as Russia and China.
So, what should you be doing to protect yourself better digitally if you’re travelling to a high-risk country?

Here are some tips which may help prevent hackers from accessing sensitive government information, corporate trade secrets, journalist contacts, and… of course… passwords which could open up a wealth of further information.

Do you need to go there in the first place?

The first question to ask yourself is this: is your journey really necessary?  Not only can a long-haul trip overseas trip have an impact on your body clock and carbon footprint, but it’s increasingly argued that face-to-face meetings are less necessary due to advances in teleconferencing and online meeting services.
To be fair, I think that a video conference call is never quite as good as meeting someone in real life, forming a good relationship over a business dinner, etc… but that doesn’t mean that it should always be necessary to have a meeting in person.

Okay, you’re going on the trip.  What will you bring with you?

If possible, do not bring your regular work laptop.
Instead bring a temporary “burner” laptop or alternative computing device that you wouldn’t be too bothered losing or having compromised. Ensure that there is no sensitive data on your devices before you make your trip.
And it doesn’t just stop at laptops.  Consider not taking your smartphone, if possible and – again – take a “burner” device instead.

Before you leave

Ensure that your security patches and anti-virus software is up-to-date.  Ideally it is wise to ensure that latest patches and updates are in place before you leave for your trip, to reduce the chances that anything you download has been compromised.

3NCrypt y0ur d@ta and d3v1C3s
Encrypt your devices – making sure to choose strong, hard-to-crack, unique passwords.  Where possible also enable multi-factor authentication and biometric checks to make it harder for an attacker to gain access to your data.
When communicating – via email or instant messaging – take advantage of end-to-end encryption when possible to prevent conversations from being intercepted.

Turn off Wi-Fi

Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when travelling.   If you must use Wi-Fi ensure that you have a trusted VPN enabled which will create an encrypted tunnel for your communications.
Even using hard-wired internet access in, say, a hotel may be inadvisable.  A 3G or 4G cellular connection remains the safest option.

Keep an eye on your devices, and beware the evil maid attack

If you do take your computer or smartphone with you, never leave them unattended.  Instead, keep your devices with you, and don’t leave them in your hotel room.
So-called “evil maid” attacks see someone access your hotel room – perhaps posing as room service – and gaining access to your laptop.  A keylogger may be installed, and your laptop returned to its normal place in your room.
Noticing nothing suspicious (and perhaps pleased to notice your mini-bar has been restocked and your bed made) you log into your device and your password is captured.  On another visit, the “evil maid” can obtain the password, and your device could have its data decrypted or be implanted with a rootkit.
If it’s impractical to bring your computer with you, you could consider leaving it in your room’s safe or check it in with the hotel concierge, but this doesn’t guarantee that it still won’t be accessed and tampered with.

Email

Talk to your IT team.  They may be prepared to set you up with a temporary “burner” email address that can be used during your trip, with messages forwarded there from your current account.  Such a system means that even if it is compromised hackers will not be able to access older communications – which will often reveal sensitive or personal identifying information.
Obviously, you should disable the forwarding of messages to the burner email account upon your return!

 A spy in your pocket

If you are worried that your smartphone may have been compromised, don’t just turn it off in meetings – remove its battery!   That way there is little chance that it is secretly recording your private conversations.  One of the advantages of carrying a “dumb” phone overseas it is unlikely to have as many methods of being compromised to either steal data or spy on you.

Social media

Be careful not to announce your whereabouts on social media either intentionally or accidentally by, for instance, uploading images containing meta data that gives away your location.

Going home

As you leave the foreign country, make a note if your devices are inspected at the border.  If they are, you may wish to be especially wary of every connecting them to your corporate network – be sure to inform your IT security team upon your return.
Obviously if you chose to take a “burner” device in the first place, there is less pain associated with dumping it upon your return

Internet attacks don’t respect country borders

Finally, remember that a determined hacker won’t necessarily limit their attacks to when you are in their country.  If they want to get into your systems they may well try when you are “safely” back in your home country as well.
Always be aware of the techniques that malicious hackers use to break into systems, ensure you have patches and anti-virus updates in place, and your wits about you.

  2. Once the Red Led has started to blink,it is time to enter the password[factory shipped password is 11223344].
  3. After entering the password again press the Key Shaped Button.
  4. Now if you have entered the right password then Red Led will switch off and Green Led will glow constantly. Now you have 10 seconds toplugthe pendrive into a free USB slot,if you fail to do so it will poweroff itself.
  5. If your password is wrong then Red Led will become static for a second or so and will finally fade out, thus you have to try again.

Our Verdict

Pros

  • All OS compatibility*(even Windows XP,we checked on it though it is dead)
  • Build Quality is Excellent
  • Hardware Level Password Protected (doesn't depend on any software)

Cons

  • Very High Price
  • Without Manual,It is not easy to remember all the functions built onto the pendrive

Conclusion

This pendrive is useful for data confidential persons like top level  management of an organisation ,scientists, etc. The data on the drives will get auto formatted(fully deleted) after 10 consecutive wrong attempts. So this is either boon or bane depending on the situation you are falling.
This pendrive is not meant for normal users as the price of ₹12880 would not be justifiable. For them it will be like any normal pendrive.

AMD RYZEN 3 1200-Review

This year most awaited product "RYZEN" is here. So finally AMD is here up products which will give Intel a hard time.We got our hands on the entry level RYZEN 3 1200 processor-"The very first of it's kind".
Available from July 27th RYZEN 3 Cpus are the least expensive cpu offering from AMD. First of all a quote from AMD's website,

AMD Ryzen™ 3 processors deliver responsive, unlocked performance for everything you do.

Before starting our review we would take a brief walkthrough of the key features of RYZEN series processors.

Key Features

ZEN Core Architecture

It is a brand new architecture that AMD build up from scratch after it's bulldozer architecture which proved to be a mediocre one. They gained 52% IPC over their last gen excavator chips while reducing power.  Discussing ZEN will be very long topic so if you want to know more check out AMD,AnandTech.

SenseMI Technology

It is a group of five technologies that helps to bring out the best from RYZEN CPUs.
  1. Pure Power
  2. Precision Boost
  3. Extended Frequenter Range(XFR)
  4. Neural Net Prediction
  5. Smart Prefetch

Benchmarks

The resolution for the all benchmarks are at 1080p.First of all some CPU tests,

Now let us move to some GPU based benchmarks and games.

From the benchmarks we see that overclocking the CPU yields in increase in all across the benchmarks somewhere it is minute like Unigine Heaven,Valley and Doom. However we see that in GeekBench 3&4 the overclocked RYZEN 3 1200 yields better score in single core while it decreases in multi core. In Crysis 3 and Battlefield 1 we see a decrease in fps(It is in the margin of error). In GTA V we were not able to complete the benchmark run because it was crashing when we oced the cpu to 3.8Ghz.

Our Verdict

Is it worth it?...........

If you are new to gaming or an a tight budget then it is definitely worth to buy,as it has a low clock speed you can overclock it to gain even more performance out of it. Here we paired it with a X370 board but we will recommend using a B350 board over this. A B350 board is available for cheap(from ₹6.5K onwards) so it will better over a A320 board and X370 would be an overkill.

If you are planning to a make a HTPC where you would use a igpu then it is not worth to buy a RYZEN 3 as they don't have a igpu but if would be buying a external GPU they go for RYZEN 3 as it cheapest quad core cpu available on the market. A RYZEN 3 based platform# would cost more than Intel' i3 based platform# as RYZEN requires a dedicated gpu.

We overclocked using RYZEN MASTER utility as overclocking was not possible via BIOS(maybe they have locked it down due to current voltage issue or maybe some other issue). We will making a comparison blog on  RYZEN 3 vs Intel cpus as well so stay tuned of that.
